About Air Arabia Abu Dhabi
Air Arabia is the Middle East and North Africa’s first and largest Low-Cost Carrier flying to over 170 destinations spread across the Middle East, North Africa, Asia and Europe. The Abu Dhabi-based subsidiary was created in October 2019 by Etihad Airways and operates from Zayed International Airport, positioning itself as the capital’s premier budget airline option.
Growing UAE Travel Market
The launch comes amid robust growth in UAE’s aviation sector. UAE airports welcomed 147.8 million passengers in 2024, significantly exceeding earlier predictions and demonstrating the region’s strong recovery and expansion in air travel. The findings show that 84% of respondents in both markets plan to take as many or more holidays in 2025 compared to 2024, indicating sustained demand for travel services.
The timing aligns well with current travel trends, as competitive pricing, flexible financing, and diverse routes are rewriting what’s possible for UAE travelers, creating new opportunities for budget-conscious Armenian travelers to explore the region.
Armenia’s tourism and air traffic
Armenia’s tourism sector has experienced significant fluctuations in recent years. The country achieved record visitor arrivals of 2,316,666 people in 2023, compared with 1,665,658 in the previous year, representing a remarkable 39% increase and marking an all-time high for Armenian tourism.
However, 2024 saw a correction with tourist numbers decreasing by 4.7% to approximately 2.2 million people. Despite this decline, the numbers remain substantially higher than pre-pandemic levels, indicating the resilience of Armenia’s tourism sector.
Looking ahead, Armenia’s Travel & Tourism market is expected to reach US$288.10m by 2025, with an anticipated annual growth rate of 7.95% through 2029. This growth is supported by Armenia’s strong economic performance, including GDP growth of 8.7% in 2023, the fastest in Europe.
The launch of Air Arabia Abu Dhabi’s services comes at an opportune time, as it provides Armenian travelers with more affordable options to reach the Gulf region while potentially attracting UAE visitors to explore Armenia’s growing tourism offerings.
The launch of Air Arabia Abu Dhabi’s service creates additional competition on the Abu Dhabi-Yerevan route, where Wizz Air Abu Dhabi has been operating since February 7, 2022. Wizz Air currently offers twice-weekly flights on Mondays and Fridays. Wizz Air Abu Dhabi started operating flights on the route Abu Dhabi -Yerevan- Abu Dhabi – Zvartnots, using Airbus A321 aircraft with a flight duration of approximately 3 hours and 15 minutes.
As the largest international airline in Armenia’s market, Wizz Air has plans to open a new base in Yerevan, as reported by Aviation Week Network, indicating a strong commitment to the Armenian market. With Air Arabia Abu Dhabi now offering six weekly flights compared to Wizz Air’s two, passengers traveling between Armenia and the UAE capital will benefit from significantly increased seat capacity, more scheduling flexibility, and competitive pricing options from two low-cost carriers serving this important route.
