The “Wings of Tatev” cable car initiates a fresh tourist season 2024

Elevating Armenia: Wings of Tatev cable car is ready for the tourist season 2024

The “Wings of Tatev,” the world’s longest reversible passenger aerial tramway, is prepared for the upcoming tourist season. Visitors to the cable car can experience breathtaking panoramic views of the ancient Tatev Monastery, explore hiking trails, participate in jeep tours, tour a medieval oil mill, and discover the fascinating exhibition “Hidden Facts about Tatev.”

During the ascent to Tatev Monastery, the cable car cabin treats passengers to sweeping views of the picturesque Vorotan Gorge, the natural wonder known as “Devil’s Bridge,” and the majestic Great Hermitage of Tatev. Upon reaching Tatev Monastery, the spiritual heart of the area, guests can tour the monks’ cells and a museum housed in a medieval oil mill.

For adventurous souls, “Wings of Tatev” offers various hiking trails and jeep tours, providing exhilarating experiences exploring the deserted medieval villages surrounding Tatev.

“Tatev has emerged as a premier tourist destination in Armenia, with one in five visitors to the country including the cable car in their itinerary. This has led to a 17-fold increase in tourist traffic to the Syunik region since 2010. We anticipate this positive trend to continue, welcoming more travelers from around the globe to uncover the charms of this exceptional region,” remarked Maria Butenko, CEO of Impulse Business Management Company, the entity overseeing the cable car operations.

Over its 13-year operational span, “Wings of Tatev” has welcomed over 1 million visitors, not only showcasing previously inaccessible parts of Armenia but also bolstering the country’s global recognition. This aerial tramway holds a place in the Guinness Book of Records as the world’s longest passenger cable car at 5752 meters, accomplished in a remarkably short construction period of 10 months. It has received prestigious accolades, winning the World Travel Awards for Best Cable Car twice, first in 2021 and again in 2023.

The construction of “Wings of Tatev” was undertaken by Doppelmayr/Garaventa, an Austrian-Swiss firm renowned for ropeway engineering. Rigorous annual safety assessments ensure that “Wings of Tatev” consistently meets international safety standards.

Part of the “Tatev Revival” program initiated by Ruben Vardanyan and Veronika Zonabend, the cable car operates as a non-profit endeavor. All proceeds are channeled toward the restoration of Tatev Monastery and community development initiatives. The management of the cable car falls under Impulse Business Management’s purview.
